Most attempts at striking a balance between private and public transport are based on the allocation of the resources of road space and finance. The book instead uses a consumers approach to focus on that component of policy which is concerned with providing all members of the community with the means of meeting their daily travel needs. This approach is discussed in the following chapters: (1) adults travel in five areas; (2) teenagers travel in five areas; (3) junior schoolchildrens travel in five areas; (4) mobility and accessibility in the outer metropolitan area; (5) personal mobility: young women with children and pensioners; (6) travel patterns of young women with children; (7) travel patterns of pensioners; (8) influence of area, and (9) summary and conclusions. /TRRL/
