This manual provides information on the transport planning policies and methods used in other European countries with the aim of providing guidance to the British authorities in their development of a sustainable transport policy. The situation in Denmark, Germany, France and the Netherlands is examined. Land use and transport planning frameworks are discussed and case studies described. In each case a drive towards sustainable transport policies is demonstrated with cooperation between all levels of government. A range of policy measures are discussed covering: (a) fiscal measures; (b) technology; (c) lifestyle; (d) urban planning and land use; (e) walking; (f) cycling; (g) public transport; (h) roads; (i) parking; (j) freight; (k) publicity; and (l) traffic calming.
