This paper examines the relationship between planning and public health professionals from a historical perspective, arguing that while the fields have always been connected, the bond has been stronger when upheld by converging theories and commonly perceived problems. Under such a conceptual umbrella, the two fields can collaborate. Since the 1990s the concept of sprawl has served as a conceptual umbrella to unite planning and public health professionals. However, it is debatable whether the concept of sprawl is rich enough to foster sustainable, long-term connections between the fields. Inevitably, public interest and funding will eventually shift away from sprawl and obesity concerns. Sustaining the relationship between planning and public health professionals may depend upon an institutional network that reflects a broader vision.
