This paper examines the neuropsychology of written language. The neuroanatomical sites underlying different language disorders are outlined and the neuroanatomical correlations of varieties of aphasia and alexia are employed as a framework upon which to build a model of the portions of the brain necessary to carry out these important cognitive operations. Recent neuropsychological studies of developmental reading disability are discussed and the theoretical implications, as well as the practical considerations, are presented.
