Abstract

Presents an update on the state of bus rapid transit, which is spreading in the U.S. after the success of the ground-breaking system in Curitiba, Brazil. Defines 6 elements of bus rapid transit, gives overviews of projects in the U.S. A key problem is diesel exhaust. Describes the international design competition for bus rapid transit systems sponsored by WestStart, a California research consortium, located on the Web at www.weststart.org.
