By systematically analyzing market share and passenger volume for all airports generating more than 1 percent of total U.S. enplanements from 1978 to 1988, this research argues that a complex mosaic of centrifugal and centripetal forces simultaneously acted on the airline industry and airports. While absolute passenger traffic volume increased rapidly at the very largest airports (e.g., Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth), the lower-order large airports captured disproportionately larger share of the passenger market (e.g., Charlotte, Phoenix, Salt Lake City). The lower-order large airports also tended to experience significant increases in the market share of the lead carrier.
