Abstract

Far-reaching changes are emerging in the industrialized world. Changes which include an aging population a decrease in the numbers of young people and changes in the composition of households. To understand the background and social consequences of these changes an interdisciplinary study of population issues is necessary. This book contains a comprehensive presentation and discussion of relevant issues in demographic research as reported by an international group of experts during a two-day workshop [held in the Netherlands in September 1989]. The studies focus on the Netherlands but have application to other developed countries. (EXCERPT)
