Versatile Victorian: Selected Writings of George Henry Lewes

Abstract

This book features the selected critical writings of George Henry Lewes, who was a major figure in Victorian literary journalism and intellectual life. His importance lies in the range of his subjects and the versatility and expertise he brought to them. This new selection of his writings - on literature, history, psychology, science and philosophy - makes available many pieces for the first time since their original publication. There is an introduction by the editor which aims to set Lewes' work in the social and literary context of its time.
