Despite statistics that point to one in five pregnancies ending in miscarriage, pregnancy loss remains a surprisingly hidden topic. This article, inspired by the author's own miscarriage, examines art as a means to understand this experience of physical and emotional loss. "The Secret Club Project," an innovative exhibit featuring 10 women artists' visual responses to miscarriage, is described. The author discusses images and symbols that reflect the miscarriage experience. Traditional and modern rituals related to pregnancy loss are reviewed, as well as artists' and art therapists' use of the creative process to move through grief and break the silence around this issue. "What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open." —Poet Muriel Rukeyser (1968)
