Abstract

The studies in this collection explore aspects of the cultural, social and artistic phenomenon known as the Tour. Art historians, classicists, architectural historians, cultural historians and scholars of literature present the context of the Grand Tour and look at some of the events and institutions to which it gave birth. The studies offered in this collection explore aspects of the cultural, social and artistic phenomenon known as the both at and beyond its recognized highpoint in the eighteenth century. Scholars from a variety of disciplines - art history, classics, architectural history, literature and cultural history - here present the context of the Tour, examine specific cases of travellers to Italy and look at some of the events and institutions to which the Grand Tour gave birth.
