The Gospels of Tsar Ivan Alexander

Abstract

The Gospels of Tsar Ivan Alexander is an outstanding treasure of the cultural and spiritual Renaissance in 14th-century Bulgaria, and a masterpiece of Byzantine manuscript art. It was not only the supreme achievement of Bulgarian medieval culture, but also marked its final flourishing shortly before the collapse of Bulgaria under the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. This major study of the Gospels tells the story of its creation and history, and is illustrated throughout with reproductions of many of the miniatures. It is intended for students of medieval history of art, manuscript scholars, calligraphers and illuminators, and anyone with an interest in Byzantine art and medieval culture.
