This paper contains a description of a project under way in West Sussex to encourage the use of bus services by young people. The work was initiated in 1996 by the County Council in response to concerns expressed by a variety of groups and individuals about the number of pupils travelling to school by car. The County Council is working in collaboration with Sian Thornthwaite Consultants and the project is partly funded by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions within its Seedcorn Research Programme. The paper describes surveys which have been carried out to establish the travel patterns of young people and their attitudes towards transport and the environment. Over 4,000 completed questionnaires have been analysed covering the journey to school and travel during off peak hours. A campaign to promote bus use for the school journey is also reported in the paper including reduced fares, improved services and publicity material distributed amongst school pupils. The results of this campaign are encouraging with a five-fold growth in the number of pupils travelling to school by bus. Whilst the first phase of the project is not due to be completed until December 1997, preliminary findings provide a valuable insight into travel among young people and an indication of the measures most likely to encourage their use of public transport.
