Since the appearance of Courband's work on Roman relief in 1899 several \nstudies of this special branch of Roman art have been mf"de either within the \nframework of Roman Imperial sculpture and art or singly in museum catalogues \nand in monograph publications of the monuments to which they belong. An immense quantity of articles and publications has also been dedicated to the \nstudy of individual reliefs or groups of reliefs. On the other hand the portraits \nfound on these reliefs have been included in monographs dealing with \nthe portraits of individual Emperors or whole dynasties. What is still lacking \nis a work dedicated solely to the study of the entire range of portraiture \nin Roman relief.
