Catholics in the Street: The Mobilization of Spanish Catholics, 1899-1923. This article attempts to explore some features of the mobilization in which, as a response to anticierical action, Spanish Catholics engaged from 1899 to 1923. To this aim, if focusses on the repertoire of collective action deployed by the Catholic movement. This repertoire involved the adaptation of old forms of liturgy and devotion to present-day purposes of fighting off secularization as well as the adoption, in pursuit of similar ends, of liberal, secular forms of protest. The paper also examines the way renewed bonds of solidarity among Catholics were being built. lt finally approaches the capital issue of the emergence of a new Catholic identity which was to be conveyed in terms of militancy and resistance.
