Abstract

A contemporary history tracing and explaining how the atolls of Tokelau were programmed by the New Zealand Government and the United Nations Decolonisation Committee to become "decolonised" and how Tokelau in a 2006 Referendum rejected their efforts. The study is based on documentary research in NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs archives and the NZ National Archives, and on ethnographic research in Tokelau and among Tokelau people in New Zealand.
