Abstract

Behavioral and social sciences play a critical, but often unrecognized, role in national well-being by illuminating the human and social dimension of issues related to engineering, technology or biology. The National Research Council's recent Establishment of the Social and Behavioral Sciences in Action (SBSIA) presents both emerging areas of research and key contributions made to policy and society by social and behavioral sciences. This article details the role of behavioral and social science research in a number of policy areas, including health care, national security and public safety and safe car travel.
