This paper will argue that the union which brought \nthe Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa \ninto being was based on an inadequate vision of the \nrole of the Church in Southern Africa. While it was a \nnatural outcome of various attempts at union for over \none hundred years, many untested assumptions were \nmade concerning the process and outcome of the \nunion. Subsequent problems have forced the UPCSA \nto reconsider the basis of the union and to work \nthrough some of the many hurts and problems experienced.
