Jing Gu provides a penetrating analysis of the key aspects of China’s changing approach to development diplomacy with the Global South. It critically evaluates Chinese perspectives and a survey of surveys of Global South views of China. Jing Gu details state level relationships but concentrates on a relatively under-investigated aspect of China’s Global South economic development diplomacy, namely, the devolved responsibility for the promotion of China’s economic diplomacy and development relationships to China’s provincial local governments. The analysis centres on the role of three provinces, Zhejiang, Hunan and Yunnan. Each offering distinct insights into how local initiatives intersect with national strategies and global dynamics, particularly in relation to Africa and Southeast Asia.
