Although I became the first editor of this project, it really began with an idea from Eeva K. Kallio, co-editor, many years ago. I took the idea to Oxford, and they agreed to start the process required to publish it seven years ago now. It is surprising how long it takes to put together a volume of this size. The basic idea for this work was to combine research and theory about adult psychological development with research and theory about wisdom. It seems such a logical integration, and with both fields growing every year, it seemed a ripe opportunity. The characteristics of wise people, uncovered during the early years of research, and the characteristics of mature adults definitely overlap. We wanted to explore that overlap in this volume, and we think we have done a good job of covering the ground in both fields. We also wanted to highlight the work of international scholars and women. When you go to look for the work of international scholars, it is not easy to find. They publish in different journals, often in languages other than English, and there is little cross-cultural work of any kind on adult development, and just a modicum of work on wisdom. Going out through our own contacts, we put together a list of authors that ranged in country of origin from China and India to Cypress, Portugal, Finland, and the usual cast of characters from the United States. We also focused on finding women who could manage the chapters as first authors. We are exceptionally pleased to present the work of these women and men, many of whom have not published in this country prior to our invitation. This was a radical choice, and we have been well rewarded for the effort.
