Introduction

Abstract

Abstract Chapter 1 begins with a description of the impetus for this volume as a desire for a wider discussion of the intersection between research and theory in adult development and research and theory in the study of wisdom. The first section describes the goals we set for this work, including the gathering of a set of international researchers and a hope that we could highlight the voices of women in this effort. This section also offers a brief history of the work in both adult development and wisdom and a short view of the future of aging across the developed world. The second section outlines the assumptions we made in bringing this literature together in one place. Next, it outlines the work of theorists in adult development that make some of the same assumptions we describe and continues this effort in reviewing theories of wisdom. Finally, it offers an overview of each of the 15 chapters that follow.
