This chapter focuses on how journalists offer explanations for the trend by drawing on messages from Home and Garden Television (HGTV) executives, as well as expert sources, audience feedback and their own viewing experiences. The chapter explores how the success of HGTV have been made sense of in the popular press and asks what portrait these explanations paint of the sub-genre of home improvement television. In Britain, Charlotte Brunsdon and her colleagues in the Midland's TV Research Group have addressed the rise of lifestyle television as prime time programming. Brunsdon-2004 noted three of the cultural contexts in British society out of which lifestyle television emerged in the 1990s including increased home ownership, the rise of female participation in the workforce, and postponed motherhood among British women. The idea of American cocooning has been important in shaping conceptions of the category of home-themed lifestyle television.
