Abstract

This article analyzes negative age stereotypes as a key component of ageism - an umbrella term encompassing a complex of beliefs, prejudiced emotional attitudes, and discrimination based on age. The theoretical model of stereotypes presented for the first time in this work is based on the paradigm of Boris G. Ananiev, the founder of the Leningrad psychological school. At its core lies the problem of the human being as the bearer and subject of mental phenomena, as a unique individuality, with the scale of measurement being the entire human lifespan. The aim of the study is to conceptualize age stereotypes as a hierarchical phenomenon that disrupts the integrity of development throughout life. It is demonstrated that internalized negative beliefs become activated when an individual reaches the corresponding chronological age, turning into «self-fulfilling prophecies». This negative effect is analyzed at different levels, each reflecting a specific level of reduction: the biological level (individual stereotypes; the main «target» - human ontogeny), the social level (personal stereotypes; the main «target» - the life path of the individual in society), and the level of human abilities and activity (subject stereotypes; the main «target» - the reflection and transformation of objective reality). This approach suggests that the multi-level impact of negative beliefs violates the principle of the unity and interconnection of human properties, hindering the formation of individuality. Consequently, it becomes possible to consider age stereotypes not as a homogeneous construct, but as a hierarchical system that distorts a holistic understanding of others and of oneself. The presented stereotype model sets a direction for future empirical research on ageism in the fields of acmeology and the psychology of aging.
