The article adopts a perspective in which generations are understood not as stable, biologically grounded cohorts, but as relational and discursively constructed socio-symbolic formations. This reconceptualization allows generationality to be approached as a performative process embedded in shifting historical and cultural contexts. Positioned as a conceptual article, the analysis does not seek to empirically test generational differences, but rather to clarify how generational categories operate as interpretive frameworks in the study of socio-economic and financial behaviour. The analysis highlights the need to move beyond essentialist approaches to generationality in favor of perspectives that recognize its contextual, evolutionary, and dynamic character. Such an approach opens new avenues for research into the relationships between generational identity and the socio-economic practices of individuals. Existing empirical studies are treated as analytical reference points that illustrate the limits of cohort-based explanations rather than as primary empirical evidence. In this sense, generational categories function primarily as cultural–discursive devices that organize economic meaning and financial conduct, rather than as analytically robust, cohort-based explanations of financial behaviour.
