About half of all entrepreneurs suffer from loneliness. However, despite growing interest, research essentially focuses on its harmful effects, while neglecting potential benefits. Breaking with this Manichean approach, this qualitative analysis of interviews with 23 entrepreneurs using paradox theory explores holistically how the dual (positive and negative) and paradoxical nature (underpinned by contradictory tensions) of loneliness manifests itself in entrepreneurs. We identify three dualities of entrepreneurial loneliness and two paradoxical tensions (need for belonging versus autonomy and identity conflicts). Finally, we discuss the absence of structured managerial responses and the search for balance in entrepreneurs’ attitudes to loneliness.
