The discovery of iron profoundly transformed the social structure of African societies. It led to the emergence of a specific social group: blacksmiths, a veritable community of iron workers. Blacksmiths often occupy a special position within traditional societies. In the commune of Guibaré, blacksmiths form a caste-like social group, practising endogamy. Their status is marked by social ambivalence: they are both feared and marginalized by other groups. This study aims to identify the various blacksmith clans, retrace their migratory trajectories, analyse their social status, their socio-technical system, as well as the modes of transmission of metallurgical know-how.
