In this article, I theorize “ecological unionism”—a resolutely environmentalist model for unions whose identity and strategies are determined primarily by environmental concerns (and secondarily by employment concerns). While research has focused on the diversity of union environmentalism (i.e., how existing unions attempt to green their image and actions but only at the margins of actual practice), it has not analyzed how environmentalism can deal with and transform the labour movement. I describe how this movement is being renewed by ecological unionism, specifically by examining a French “eco-union.” This article makes an original contribution to the literature by describing the possibilities and limitations of ecological unionism. From a practical perspective, it shows unions the way forward to address environmental concerns.
