This brief essay is mainly didactic in nature and focuses on a few case studies of prehistoric rock art in the lower Douro basin. It comprises painted and/or engraved panels: the Fraga do Puio Archer, the Cachão da Rapa rockshelter and two rockshelters in the Passos-Santa Comba-Garraia Mountain. The singular choices of some outcrops, or panels, on a macro and micro scale are discussed, with an emphasis on the latter. The main focus is on the knowledge needed to explore some of the physical properties of the rocks and their potential to fulfil the objectives of the Middle-Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic communities in this region.
