ABS TRACT Objective:The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between nurses' emotional intelligence levels and attitudes toward ageism.Material and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 265 nurses working in a hospital in Adana between June 1, 2024 and August 1, 2024.Data were collected using a "Nurse Information Form", the "Ageism Attitude Scale", and the "Revised Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale".Results: In the present study, it was found that as the score of the ageism attitude scale increased, the score of the emotional intelligence scale decreased, and there was a negative and very weak correlation between them (r=-0.134,p=0.029).A negative, very weak to weak, and statistically significant correlation was found between the restricted elderly life subscale and emotional intelligence (r=-0.380,p<0.001).As the negative ageism score increased, the score of emotional intelligence scale decreased.A positive, very weak, and statistically significant correlation was found between the emotional intelligence scale and the restricted elderly life subscale (r=0.241,p<0.001).As the score of the restricted elderly life subscale increased, the score of the emotional intelligence scale also increased. Conclusion: The variable of emotional intelligence affects nurses' attitudes toward older individuals.Based on the results of the study, it is recommended to plan in-service training, which aim to enhance the emotional intelligence levels of nurses and their attitudes toward ageing and the ageing process, and to develop policies to address ageism in the healthcare field.
