With the demands from the market and the maturation of technology, electronic commerce (e-commerce) stands out and becomes the primary shopping method in today’s society. However, despite its rapid expansion, existing scholarship often prefers to analyze the benefits rather than drawbacks. This study conducts a multidimensional analysis of China’s e-commerce landscape, examining its developmental trajectory, inherent opportunities, and critical challenges—particularly concerning data governance and consumer rights protection. The author put forward the advantages such as lower entry barriers and operational costs, regardless the impact of time and location, and algorithm-driven precision marketing mechanism. Then, by synthesizing insights from digital economics and consumer behavior theories, the paper identifies key bottlenecks, such as information asymmetry, digital exclusion among old adults and disabilities, data misuse and privacy vulnerabilities and so on. Subsequently, it proposes targeted optimization strategies designed to reconcile digital innovation with regulatory efficacy. These findings offer actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to foster a resilient and equitable digital economy.
