Preventive conservation involves working effectively in the area of museum management. This requires the conservator to possess a number of skills which go beyond those necessary for interventive conservation, for example confidence, political awareness, motivation, patience and, above all, good judgment. Students must learn or develop these skills within training courses already hampered by crowded curricula, restrictions on course duration and limited teaching resources. The MA course in conservation of historic objects at the University of Durham has found project work an effective way of developing in the students the range of skills required for preventive conservation. Project work emphasizes the need to develop a pro-active approach and teaches the skill of consciously learning from experience.
