SUMMARYThe general influence of past experience upon the individual's way of conceiving the world is discussed, and the role of recognition as a fundamental intellectual process is stressed. It is argued that in discussing an organism's adjustment to its environment, it is extremely important to distinguish between the cognitive ability to equate different sets of experience and a lack of capacity to discriminate between stimuli. Finally it is suggested that the individual's way of conceiving a problem situation will in most cases prove to depend on how past experiences is found to be represented in the present situation.
