This chapter suggests that no other industry besides cruise tourism is more deeply rooted in, and dependent on, globalization processes. It shows that the cruise sector is almost completely controlled by transnational corporations and that as passengers and crew are global in scope, the ships themselves have become global microcosms. With the potential for being repositioned at any time, they have also become 'deterritorialized', to the extent that the ships are gradually becoming distanced from the sea itself.
