The article notes that geographic information systems for transportation (GTS-T) could be used to more efficiently store and access data to meet existing statutory and operational requirements. GIS-T compined with the appropriate set of analytical tools could provide a useful and cost-effective tool for transportation authorities. LUTS, land use transportation system, a computerized model for determining the generation (demand model) of traffic is described, and its integration with GIS-T is discsussed. A leading innovator in the use of GIS-T is the State of Wisconsin. Many others are investigating the set up of systems or involved in prototypes. Keys issues are the optimal set up for GIS-T for a particular application, and in particular, the adoption of common data standards so that data may be more readily transferred between and within agencies. There are many possibilities for using GIS and LUTS together, and it is yet to be determined how these may be most optimally packaged.
