In order to test the hypothesis of biologically distinct, local populations as contrib utors to the Hopewell interaction sphere, cranial measures and cranial discrete trait frequencies are compared among twelve Ohio skeletal samples. Results of the anal ysis show that the skeletal sample from the Hopewell site expresses the same pattern of cranial size and shape variation and the same pattern of discrete trait expression as the Late Archaic skeletal samples. These results are interpreted as indicating biological continuity within this area, for at least this one Hopewell population. In addition, the present results argue against the hypothesis of large-scale migrations of Hopewell populations from Illinois to Ohio.
