Geographers justify the universality of their areas of investigation by maintaining that no matter what happens, it must happen somewhere . That is, every event (or occurrence) has locational attributes which may be analysed in the search for understanding and predictability. However, geographers also recognize the existence of non-spatial factors and are generally careful to avoid falling into the trap of spatial determinism whereby each event is explained as purely the outcome of its location. It is therefore emphasized that, despite its focus, this chapter does not refl ect an exclusive reliance on spatial analysis and is intended as a contribution to a collection which demonstrates the multidisciplinarity of approaches through which urban tourism precincts may be examined.
