The aim of this chapter is to survey his publications in rhetoric and dialectic in order to determine Juan Luis Vives?s original contribution and to discuss whether or not his subsequent neglect was justified. It begins with a chronological survey of the works in question and a consideration of how they might be thought to fit together as a unified treatment of the two subjects. Then the chapter analyses some detailed examples of Vives?s significant contributions. Finally it considers the factors in the texts and the context of their reception which may explain their lack of success in the sixteenth century. Most of Vives?s publications date from the 1530s when he had returned to Bruges, having lost the patronage of Henry VIII and Queen Catherine in the course of the royal divorce proceedings. Keywords: De censura very ; Henry VIII; Juan Luis Vives; Queen Catherine
