The full significance of women's low travel mobility is only apparent when set against the historical changes that have occurred in their lifestyle during the latter half of the 20th century. These changes arose as a result of women's growth in the labor market accompanied by a negligible change in their domestic circumstances. The problems women face in allocating time to both a domestic and a working role increase the importance of having good travel mobility. This chapter analyzes the causes and employment consequences of low travel mobility among women on the basis of time-geographic studies of women's activity patterns in Reading, Berkshire, and NTS analysis.
