The international institute for the unification of private law (UNIDROIT) is an independent intergovernmental organization with its seat in Rome. UNIDROIT was originally founded in 1926 as an auxiliary organ of the League of Nations. A well-known member and promoter of the Institute was the German professor Ernst Rabel, who served as a member from 1927. Membership of UNIDROIT is restricted to states acceding to the UNIDROIT Statute. There are currently 61 member states from five continents. The organizational structure is laid down in the UNIDROIT statute. The authorities of UNIDROIT are the general assembly, the governing council, and the secretariat. Since 1985, the government of Italy has supported the work of the Institute by providing 300 million Italian lire per annum. UNIDROIT has a network of correspondents in both member and non-member states which provide information on the law in the various states and regions.
