Fourteen more radiocarbon dates have been obtained for archaeological sites in Western Polynesia. All samples were dated by Gakushuin University Laboratory in Japan using the Libby half life of C-14 of 5,570 years. The three samples from Tonga were collected in 1964, during excavations carried out as part of an initial three year Polynesian prehistory programme sponsored by the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, and financed by the National Science Foundation. A preliminary report on the investigation in Tonga is available/2) The samples from Western Samoa were collected between 1965 and early 1967 during the course of additional investigations in that group which were part of a further three year programme with the same sponsorship and financial support as the first/2) Eight dates, relating to three separate projects, are reported on below. Three further dates, for samples obtained from excavations at site Va-4, will be published when additional dates for the site are available. Suffice it to say at present that dates from the hearth horizon at Va-4 support those previously obtained by Golson of a 1st century A.D. or earlier date for the ceramic horizon of an adjacent site, Va-1.(3)
