This introductory chapter of the book encompasses functional definition to analyse tu variously as programmes for action, process-oriented schemas, functional representations and blueprints. The examples of text and tu include encodings of: cosmic processes; a path to enlightenment; the exegesis of a classical text; the construction of a silk-reeling machine; the reconstruction of a criminal assault; and the coursing of energy through the human body. The chapter provides a brief survey of the history of tu and of other recent scholarship; and offers preliminary explorations of some themes suggested by the contributions. It proposes a basic typology of tu , and offers some suggestions about historical trends or shifts in the uses of tu ; changing conceptions of the nature of tu and their relation to text and to other categories of graphic representation; the media in which tu were executed; and the design and production of different kinds of tu .
