A NEW THEORY FOR PREDICTING TRAVEL PATTERNS IN URBAN AREAS IS PRESENTED. GIVEN THE DISTRIBUTION OF RESIDENCES OF WORKERS AND THE LOCATIONS OF ALL JOBS IN BOUNDED REGION, THE PROPOSED METHOD CAN BE USED TO DEVELOP THEORETICAL WORK-TRIP PATTERNS THAT APPROACH THE ACTUAL PATTERNS CLOSELY ENOUGH TO BE USABLE. THIS METHOD IS LESS COSTLY THAN A COMPREHENSIVE O-D SURVEY. FURTHER RESEARCH MAY LEAD TO THEORIES FOR PREDICTING SHOPPING-TRIP, PERSONAL-BUSINESS-TRIP, AND RECREATION-TRIP PATTERNS.
