This chapter emphasizes properties of earthy materials (rocks, soils or wastes) that influence pollution and landscape quality. The selection of properties and the methods used to measure these properties are based on the objective to develop a desirable postmining land use. Accurate overburden (soil and rock) data in the planning stage of a new mine is important to the environmental and economic success of the mine. Physical properties of soils are most important in determining its productivity. While chemical properties of a new mines oil exert the strongest initial influence on the minesoil's productivity, this influence lessens as the pedogenic processes moderate the rapid weathering of recently exposed materials. The reconstruction of minesoils offers the opportunity to avoid some of the extreme effects of undesirable physical properties by preplanning the reclamation process based on a thorough overburden analysis program.
