Buddhism’s development in both Australia and New Zealand has increased dramatically in the last twenty years. Buddhism in Australia and New Zealand reflects many of the trends that have been identified in Buddhism’s growth in other Western countries; however, some regional differences also exist. This chapter examines the demographics and history of Buddhism in Australia and New Zealand to demonstrate this. The current status of Buddhism in these religiously plural nations is also discussed, particularly in relation to the extent to which this formerly foreign religion is becoming considered part of the mainstream.
