Since this article expands McGinnis's seminal 1980 study on freight transportation choice, a brief review of his study is necessary. McGinnis looked at twelve empirical studies of transport choice (six pre-deregulation, six post-deregulation), each of which dealt with either modal or carrier selection. These twelve studies were based on information from transportation users in the U.S. Although never explicitly defined, 1980 was used as the demarcation point between pre- and post-deregulation studies. This article will include those studies offering an evaluation of either modal or carrier selection, based on data from transportation users in the U.S. Unlike the McGinnis study, this article includes transport choice articles published during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
