This report presents the results of research aimed at calibrating and testing the gravity model for a small urban area. The first part deals with the application of the gravity model theory to travel patterns in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, population 62,000. A gravity model trip distribution formula was calibrated from comprehensive information on the area's travel patterns and related characteristics. The ability of this model to simulate the trip distribution patterns was investigated by comparing the gravity model movements with movements obtained from a standard origin-destination survey. The second part of the report deals with investigations into the minimum amount of data required to calibrate a gravity model in a small urban area.
