Until recently Friedrich Schleiermacher’s thoughts on hermeneutics were not so widely acknowledged as his famous works on Religion, the theological curriculum and the Christian Faith. One reason for this was the state of their publication. Apart from his two addresses to the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin, which form a coherent text, Schleiermacher’s reflections on hermeneutics are available to us mainly in the form of notes from lectures which he delivered at the University of Berlin. In the context of his collected works we find only one manuscript on hermeneutics, the so-called Kompendienartige Darstellung of 1819, edited and further enriched through student notes by Friedrich Lücke in 1838. Lücke’s edition, however, has never been republished and is fairly inaccessible. But editorial circumstances are not the only reason for the longlasting unpopularity of Schleiermacher’s hermeneutical thoughts. A second reason can be seen in the propaganda against Schleiermacher the hermeneut, recently reformulated by Hans-Georg Gadamer in all four editions of his work Wahrheit und Method ( Truth and Method ). These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
