Numerous studies have shown that the mortality pattern of migrants is different from the mortality pattern of non-migrants because of various living and social conditions (e.g., food, health care, working conditions) as well as different experiences in the country of origin (e.g., Krueger/Moriyama, 1967; Coleman, 1982; Marmot et al., 1984; Altenhofen/Weber, 1993; Harding, 2000; Ronellenfitsch et al., 2006). As a result, migrants often have lower mortality rates than the local population, in spite of their lower socioeconomic status. This finding is in contradiction to the correlation between low socioeconomic status and high mortality known from several studies, and is therefore often referred to as a “paradox.” These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
