This chapter explores two features of the discussion of self-knowledge in the latter part of Plato?s Alcibiades 1 (Alc.). It seeks to locate these features of the dialogue more firmly in their dialectical and dramatic context in the Alcibiades as a whole. The chapter shows that the study of concepts of self and more traditional types of interpretative reading (focused on textual and exegetical questions) are mutually informing. It makes a detailed study of the language, structure and literary form of the relevant text in order to understand the ideas about selfhood expressed in a given ancient text. Similarly, formulating a precise account of the thinking about selfhood expressed in the text can advance our interpretative reading more generally. This is the type of methodology the author seeks to deploy in this chapter. In aiming at this objective, the author have very much in mind the work of Denis O?Brien. Keywords: Alcibiades; Denis O?Brien; Plato; self-knowledge
