This article discusses the literature on postponed parenthood in the US and Canada. The main reasons for delaying childbearing include 1) medical advances which improve the chances for safe births and healthy infants for older mothers 2) ages at marriage 3) availability of contraceptives and 4) infertility. For older parents it is a conscious decision to have a child. The trend of postponed parenthood changes the traditional family life cycle. Another form of postponed parenthood is that of 2nd marriages in which later children are born. This paper ends with several suggestions for further research.
