The United Nations Global Compact (GC) is a voluntary, international learning network that links companies with United Nations (UN) agencies, labour organizations, and civil society. The idea of a 'Global Compact' was first proposed by the former secretary general (SG) of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. The GC involves different social actors such as companies, labour, civil society organizations, academia, and the United Nations as convener and facilitator. The GC's organizational structure has been subject to several reviews since the initiative's establishment in July 2000. The global compact office (GCO) is an integral part of the secretary general's office at UN headquarters in New York. The learning forum is a virtual platform that is conceptually located at the heart of the GC's engagement mechanisms. The current structure of the learning forum is by itself a result of an ongoing organizational and network learning process.
